Understanding and Supporting Gender Diversity in School

Todd A. Savage, Ph.D., NCSP 

Transgender and gender diverse students face a myriad of challenges affecting their abilities to succeed at school. This session is designed to assist the participant to understand what gender diversity is; the experiences of gender diverse students in school; how participants can support gender diverse students; and legal and ethical considerations that need to be considered in this process. Direct instruction and large group interactions will be employed to enhance participant learning.  

 Biography:

Todd A. Savage, Ph.D., NCSP, a Minnesota native, is an associate professor in the school psychology program at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UWRF); he is also the Immediate Past President of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), having served as the NASP President during the 2015-2016 year. Dr. Savage earned his doctorate from the University of Kentucky in 2002 and prior to his current position at UWRF, Dr. Savage was an assistant professor and the director of training in the school psychology program at New Mexico State University. To date, he has co-facilitated over 40 PREPaRE core and Training of Trainers workshops. Dr. Savage's scholarly research interests include culturally-responsive practice; social justice; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues in education; and school safety and crisis prevention, preparedness, and intervention. 

The purpose of this session is...

1.To augment participants' awareness of gender identity and gender diversity,in general.


2.To assist participants in constructing and/or enhancing their knowledge base pertaining to gender identity, gender diversity, and the schools

3. To increase participants 'potential to work successfully with this population.

4. To make participants aware of some of the legal and ethical considerations to be considered when working with gender-diverse students.


5. To provide an opportunity for participants to have their questions and needs for clarification about gender-diverse students as well as participants' responsibilities in working with this population of students.
