Description of Presentation:

This is "hands on" workshop to provide participants with an opportunity to problem solve implementation issues they are encountering as they begin the PBIS and/or SEL Implementation process. In addition, participants will be able to address concerns they are encountering with providing tier 1 supports and programs. The workshop is most relevant to those practitioners who have begun to implement a tiered model of support and have questions and challenges in working with colleagues to begin or sustain the process in the whole school setting. Participants will also have the opportunity to address issues encountered in implementing specific SEL instructional programs. Participants will hear about some situations encountered and addressed by the presenter in her work consulting with schools. They will also have the opportunity to present challenging situations they are encountering and brain storm solutions within a supportive workshop environment. Lastly, the presenter will provide some resources for participants to access in the future as they work to implement school wide PBIS and SEL programs.

Goals of Presentation:

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Learn about resources they can access to assist in implementing PBIS and overcoming challenges

2. Develop problem solving approaches for issues encountered during the implementation process

3. Develop some specific solutions for beginning specific SEL programs in the schools. 

Presenter’s Name: Dr. Sara Whitcomb, PhD

Dr. Sara Whitcomb, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the UMASS Amherst School Psychology Program. She received her doctorate from the University of Oregon and her masters from Harvard University. Her dissertation focused on the effect of a social emotional learning curriculum (Strong Start) on the emotional knowledge and skills of first grade students. Dr. Whitcomb's interests include social/emotional evaluation and learning, school counseling and support, home-school collaboration, and resiliency and its impact on school success. Dr. Whitcomb continues to develop the Strong Start SEL series initially developed by her mentor, Kenneth Merrill.  She is also a PBIS trainer for the MA DESE PBIS Academy.

Each workshop is 3 hours long and a light dinner is served.

If you attend the first three workshops, the final workshop will be $10 for members and $15 for non-members (a discount code will be provided prior to registration time for the final workshop).

Continuing Education Policy

The Massachusetts School Psychologists Association is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer contact hours. The DESE requires the completion of a pre-test, which is to be completed prior to the workshop start time. A post-test is also required and will be given at the end of the workshop. Participants must attend the ENTIRE WORKSHOP and satisfy state regulations in order to receive contact hours. Each participant is responsible for knowing and meeting the DESE licensure requirements.

CE HOURS: The Massachusetts School Psychologists Association is approved by the National Association of School Psychologists to sponsor continuing education (CE) for psychologists. In keeping with NASP requirements, these are awarded in contact hours only. CE hours will be awarded at the close of the workshop.  MSPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
